Degloving Injury Surgery
    DE-GLOVING INJURIES

    What is a "De-gloving Injury"?
A de-gloving injury occurs as the result of severe trauma that causes tissue planes to
separate. "Degloving" sometime invokes a mental image that is only partially correct. In
some cases it is similar to the removal of a glove from a hand or involves the scraping
back of tissue. Another example would be scalping. This type of de-gloving injury is
    known as an "open injury".

De-gloving injuries can also be "closed". If a tremendous force is applied to the body
with sufficient power but of brief enough duration the skin may not tear. The separation
of the tissue planes breaks blood vessels. The upper layers of the separated tissue may
become necrotic from a lack of blood supply. The more planes of tissue involved, the
more difficult it will be to heal. In a closed degloving injury the skin may become
abnormally loose as it lacks the normal connections to underlying tissues.

Degloving injuries are often the result of an
    accident involving industrial machinery,
motorcycle accidents, or when a pedestrian
or bicyclist is struck by a car or truck. As the
name implies these injuries are extremely
    painful and require immediate medical
    treatment including surgery. While a
degloving injury itself is extremely serious
they are often accompanied by other injuries
such as a brain, spinal cord or amputation
injury because of the mechanism of injury
    involved.
